School is done! Now it’s time to prepare for a long summer full of lots of outdoor activities. We are sharing our 6 toxin-free summer essentials that we use all summer with our kids and the DIY recipes to make them.

Although most summer essentials like sunscreen and bug spray can be pretty toxic, there are safe alternatives that are easy to make or even buy if that’s more your style. We’ve compiled our list of 6 must-haves for your summer that are safe for the whole family.toxin-free-summer-essentials-kids-diy-recipes.psd

6 Toxin-Free Summer Essentials for Kids
with DIY Recipes

Owie Spray Recipe

Put 20 drops each of Frankincense, Lavender & Melaleuca essential oils in a 4oz glass spray bottle.  Fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil.  This combination is great for minor cuts and scrapes. Cut the recipe in half for a 2oz bottle.

Safe, Toxin-Free Bug Spray

Purchase the 30ml spray bottle (email us to order) or make your own. Put 30 drops of the Repellent Blend essential oil in your own glass spray bottle. Mix it with 1/2 cup boiled (cooled off) water and 1/2 cup witch hazel. Not only does it repel mosquitos, but you won’t feel the need to take a shower after applying.

Homemade Hand Cleanser Spray

In a 4oz spray bottle put 20 drops of the Protective Blend essential oil and 1 tablespoon aloe vera or fractionated coconut oil and fill the remainder with boiled (cooled off) water. If you prefer the gel version, it’s 5 tablespoons aloe vera gel, 4 tablespoons water, 1/4 teaspoons vitamin E oil, 10 drop Protective Blend essential oil in a small silicone squeeze container.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint provides a wonderful cooling effect that is lovely on hot days! Put 20 drops of peppermint essential oil in a rollerball bottle and fill the rest with Fractionated Coconut Oil.  Apply to the back of the neck and wrists as needed.

Toxin-Free Water Bottle

Keep a water bottle handy at all times. My favorite is the S’well Stainless Steel bottles. They come in all sizes. We also like the Thermos Foogo for toddlers.

Safe Sun Protection

Our first option is to use clothes that contain SPF. We’ve put together a ton of options at this link, but definitely recommend a good hat at a minimum. When it comes to sunscreen, it’s often pretty toxic. We prefer to use a safe sunscreen that absorbs easily. Beautycounter’s is our favorite. They also have a lip balm and tinted moisturizer with SPF.

Remember to always keep some healthy snacks on hand like cut up veggies with hummus, Lara Bars, or fruit. Now you’re ready for anything summer brings your way!
