According to the Mayo Clinic, BPA is an “industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s.” It’s in many plastics (bottles, toys, containers etc), most metal cans including soda cans, and even on paper currency and receipts. Research has shown that BPA can seep into food or beverages from containers leading to some serious health concerns, especially for pregnant women, babies and young children.
Some of the potential risks of BPA include:
- Increased cancer risk
- Hormone disruption
- Fertility issues
- Increase diabetes risk
- Heart problems
- Thyroid issues
- Fetal development issues
In recent years, the truth about BPA has come out and consumers have started demanding BPA-free plastic, especially for children’s products. As usual, we trusted manufacturers that BPA-free was a safer alternative for our family. Recent studies are proving that to be wrong.
BPS is harmful too!
BPS is an alternative to BPA that was supposed to be better for our health. Unfortunately it has been linked to speeding up embryonic development and disrupting the reproductive system in Zebrafish. That’s scary, especially for pregnant mommas! BPS, like it’s close friend BPA, has also been found to cause thyroid disruption. So it seems we are no better off with BPA-free alternatives.
So what is the best alternative?
The best thing to do is avoid plastics altogether. Use glass, silicone, ceramic or stainless steel. If you have to use plastic, choose the safer #2, #4, or #5 plastics.
