Like most households nowadays, our dishwasher is a vital piece of our clean house puzzle, but we’ve struggled to find a good dishwasher detergent that also has a safe rating from the Environmental Working Group website.
A year ago we used the Finish Quantum Powerball Dishwasher Detergent. They worked very well even when we were lazy and wouldn’t pre-rinse the dishes, but according to the EWG’s website it rates a C.
As we’ve become more aware of what we are putting into our bodies, we have realized we eat and drink off the dishes and there is always residue! Another thing that concerns us is the toxic steam that comes out of the dishwasher fills our home and invades our lungs.
So Shana did some research and found a safe, non-toxic dishwasher detergent, Seventh Generation Free & Clear Concentrate Pacs, that rates an A on the EWG website. It surprisingly works really well, especially with a few drops of lemon essential oil mixed in with the detergent.
Recently we ran out and I couldn’t find it at the store so I assumed any product from the same brand would be safe. So I bought Seventh Generation Lemon Dishwashing Gel. I was wrong. It rates an F on the EWG website.
Even though you think a brand is a safe or natural company, it’s important to always check the ratings beforehand. You might be surprised to find that even a simple change in scent can change the product safety rating. With Finish Powerballs, the orange rates an F and the green apple rates a C.
Check how your dishwasher detergent rates and make sure you are making a safe choice for your family.
