I often get asked the question “what shampoo do you use?” I hesitate to answer as this is one of the more natural areas of my beauty routine and definitely makes me feel like a hippie. Although I know my natural solutions are effective, they are definitely unconventional and warrant some crazy looks.
Why? Because I don’t wash my hair. That’s right. I don’t use shampoo or conditioner on my hair. I use what’s called the “No Poo Hair Cleansing Routine”. I learned about it over 3 years ago when I was in a season of wanting to save money everywhere I could and was determined to cut down on our toiletries cost. I knew I had to give this routine a try.
The No Poo Natural Hair Cleansing Routine
Shampoo: 1 TBS baking soda in 1 cup water
Conditioner: 1 TBS Apple Cider Vinegar in 1 cup water; You will want to use an organic acv with the mother in it, like Bragg.
Smell Good Spray: 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil & 10 drops Rosemary Essential Oil in 4oz water; This is something I added to the routine. I missed the smell of shampoo so I created this spray. Rosemary and Lavender are great for your hair, but you can choose any oils you like.
Tips for No Poo Hair Cleansing Routine
- Always brush your hair before you get in the shower.
- Massage the baking soda/shampoo mixture into your scalp while it’s still dry so you know you have covered your scalp.
- Apply the apple cider vinegar/conditioner mixture to your hair, but not your scalp.
- Keep a wide-tooth comb in the shower. After applying the acv/conditioner, start at the ends of your hair and comb through it to work the mixture in and detangle your hair.
- Use the right bottles. I like the plastic condiment bottles for the shampoo/conditioner because I can get it under my hair and onto the scalp easily.
- As always with essential oils, use a glass or metal bottle for the smell good spray.
- Add some fractionated coconut oil, jojoba, or almond oil to the smell good spray to moisturize curly or dry hair.
Results of No Poo Hair Cleansing Routine
Wash less often. At first my hair was more oily than it had ever been. After shampoos had been stripping my scalp of its naturally occurring oils for years, my body had adjusted with an overproduction of oils. Honestly, it took probably a month for my scalp to balance out. Now, it takes 3-4 days for my hair to get oily in between “washes.” When I was using shampoo, I needed to be washing my hair at least every other day, which I knew wasn’t good for it. Now my scalp is balanced – not oily or dry and I wash 2 maybe 3 times per week. That saves me a lot of time since I have a lot of hair. I LOVE saving time!
No more back breakouts. At the time I started this routine, I had terrible breakouts all over my back and nothing I had tried was working to stop them. The best part of switching to this no poo routine was that my back breakouts went away completely. You heard me, completely! My only guess is that conventional shampoo and conditioner was clogging my pores. However, apple cider vinegar has been known to help with breakouts.
Significantly slowed hair loss. Prior to starting this routine, Casey had been using expensive, toxic hair products from Nioxin in an attempt to stop his hereditary hair loss. Let’s just say it was pretty ineffective. When he ran out and I wouldn’t buy anymore, he gave my no poo cleansing routine a shot. He noticed within a few weeks that his hair was falling out significantly less. Now a few years later, there has been very little thinning of his hair.
Reduced toxic load. Okay, so maybe this isn’t something that I can actually see the result of, but I know that the shampoo and conditioners I was previously using were full of toxic chemicals that were not good for me. There’s no telling what damage they were doing to my body, but now I know that with this small change, I’m putting less toxins in my body and that’s always a good thing.
Is it right for you?
If you’re used to expensive salon products or expect high performance, this probably isn’t the routine for you. That doesn’t mean you have to stick with the toxic products though. Give Beautycounter’s cleansing routine a try if you want salon quality performance without the toxins and harsh chemicals.
If you’re looking for an effective routine that will save you money and reduce toxins, or you want to experience some of the other results I mentioned, commit to trying this routine for 60 days.
Side Note: Like everything, there is controversy surrounding this routine and whether it’s good for your hair or damages it. I’ve used this routine for years and can say from experience that I haven’t seen it do any damage to my hair. However, each person is unique so you never know until you try.
Essential Oil Quality: The essential oil industry is not a regulated industry which means it’s difficult to know which brands you can trust to be truly 100% certified pure therapeutic grade and safe for your whole family. I did my research to find a brand I can trust. If you want to learn about the brand I personally use or order essential oils for your home, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
