Vetiver Essential Oil Uses & Benefits

Home / Wellness / Vetiver Essential Oil Uses & Benefits

Vetiver essential oil is one that you are going to hate at the first smell, but will learn to love over time. You might also think that someone is tricking you when you try to get a drop out of the bottle. It’s verrrrry thick and requires a little warming in your hands and patience to get a drop.

Vetiver comes from Haiti and is called the lovely dirt. It definitely smells like dirt, but I never quite understood the lovely part. That was until I heard stories of the impact its calming and grounding effect was having on some children that I knew that struggled with occasional emotional outbursts and unstable behaviors. I know those parents believe it’s a VERY lovely dirt.

If you can’t stand the smell, consider blending it with lavender essential oil or the Calming Blend essential oil. My friend, Heather, introduced me to that combination and loves it so much that I put it in her homemade bath salts this Christmas.

Vetiver is a great example of why you shouldn’t judge an oil by its smell.

Practical uses for Vetiver essential oil:

  • After a day of standing, apply to feet as part of a soothing massage.
  • After a difficult school day, apply to your child’s neck and feet to promote feelings of calm.
  • Is rich in sesquiterpenes, which gives it a grounding effect.
  • Calming, grounding effect on emotions.
  • After a hard day’s work, apply as part of a soothing aromatic massage.
  • Use as an earthy base note in your favorite DIY diffuser blends.
  • Used in many popular perfumes.

Emotionally, Vetiver essential oil is The Oil of Centering & Descent. Vetiver brings the individual back down to earth. It assists them in grounding to the physical world.

Vetiver is also found in the Women’s Blend and the Focus Blend.
